History
Tibetan Terriers are believed to be originally from Tibet, and their origin can be traced back as far as 2,000 years ago. In Tibet they were raised as companion dogs for the Lamas in the monasteries. Tibetan Terriers was seen as good luck charms. These dogs were called terriers even although there are no terriers in their backgrounds. Tibetan Terriers are valued very highly as bringers of good luck, and therefore cross breeding of these dogs were never attempted. The Tibetan Terriers were first brought to England during the 1920s.
Characteristics
The Tibetan terrier is a medium size dog, and they have a long coat that covers their eyes. Although they have terrier associated with their name, they have no terrier characteristics. These dogs are tough, hairy flexible. Tibetan Terriers make wonderful family pets, but they are also very good at guarding, herding and protecting.
Temperament
Tibetan Terriers are very loyal, reliable and friendly dogs. They are very feisty and also very fond of playing and they have lots of energy – but they can also be very calm and level-headed. These dogs are very supple, and also love to climb – therefore they should be kept in a safe and secure area. These dogs will enjoy frequent walks as part of their exercise routines. Tibetan Terriers love to be in the company of their families, and will not be the right dog for those with little time on their hands. This breed is happy go lucky, friendly and pleasant. These dogs also have high problem solving skills, they are clever and very quick to learn new things. Training can be a bit of a challenge seeing that these dogs can be obstinate at times.
Care
Grooming requirements for Tibetan Terriers are quite high, but they require less maintenance as they grow older. Their coats should be brushed several times during the week in order to keep it in good condition – and their coats should also be trimmed every 4 weeks or so. The hair around their bottoms should be kept short to promote good hygiene. It is also advised that their ears should be checked to make sure they are dry and clean inside. Training
This breed learns very quickly, and they are also very keen to please their owners. They have an intelligent nature, and this might lead to them avoiding things they have already learned. It is advised that Tibetan Terriers are socialised early, and also taught in obedience. The Tibetan terrier will not respond well to rough training methods, and will do much better with positive training methods.
