History

The Fox Terriers was originally developed for fox hunting purposes during the 19th century in England. These Terriers used to chase the fox from its den after is has been cornered by fox hounds. Wire Fox Terriers have been used for many hunting actions in England, especially for the hunting of foxes. This breed also excels in many different actions such as hunting, watch dogging and tracking – they are also excellent at performing tricks.

Characteristics

Seeing that these dogs are terriers, they are very energetic and bouncy – making these joys a pleasure to be around. The Wire Fox terrier will always change the atmosphere in a room as they have a wonderful sense of humour. These dogs are lovely companions, but can be a bit reserved toward strangers. Wire Fox Terriers are very playful, and their personalities come with lots of energy which makes them very popular with most families. Potential owners should however make sure these dogs are right for their family setup.

Temperament

Wire Fox Terriers are very warm, energetic and watchful little dogs. This is a breed that is spontaneous and curious – and they also love to chase things. He is very supple and quick, and should be kept in a safe and secure area to make sure they will not run off. Wire Fox Terriers have a great quantity of energy, and they will need enough exercise. These dogs are best suited to families that are very active. Although these dogs are fairly independent, they also love the companionship and attention of their families. These dogs want physical and mental stimulation, and will not work well with families that have little time to devote to pets. These dogs can be quite obstinate at times, and also domineering. It is important that these dogs get early socialization, and also positive but firm training.

Care

Wire Fox Terriers require quite a bit of grooming, and their coats should be brushed on a weekly basis. The hair inside their ears should also be trimmed. Hair around their bottoms should also be kept short in order to promote good hygiene. Coats of these dogs should also be trimmed once every few months, and if they are show dogs, it should be stripped ever so often. Training

The Wire Fox Terrier is a very active little dog, and can be quite independent – therefore training at a very early age is important. These dogs can loose interest in training fairly early, and therefore requires a firm and reliable trainer. If the training sessions are fun, their interest will be kept longer. Experienced trainers are recommended for these dogs, as they can be quite wilful and obstinate. If the correct training methods are not followed, these dogs will become very difficult to train.
