History

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has its origin from France and Holland. These dogs were developed during the late 19th century. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was used as flexible and resourceful hunters – being able to cover all sorts of terrain. These dogs are fairly rare, and many consider them to be one of the best-kept secrets in the Sporting group of dogs.

Characteristics

Many people lovingly refer to these dogs as “Griffs”. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is an elegant, strong and medium-sized dog that has lots of passion. They make wonderful family pets, and they are also very eager hunting dogs. They are very capable of problem solving, and also do very well when it comes to obedience. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is also a very bright and clever dog.

Temperament

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are excellent dogs to take in as family pets because they are very reliable and keen to please their owners. These dogs are well suited to both experienced and inexperienced owners, and they have a very high intelligence and do well at learning. Housebreaking can be a challenge with some of the Griffons. These dogs flourish on the company of their families, and also love mental and physical stimulation. If they don’t get enough exercise and are left alone for too long, these dogs can become destructive.

Care

Grooming needs for Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are fairly moderate. The coats of these dogs need brushing a couple of times during the week, and their facial hair should also be cleaned. It is also advised that the hair around their bottoms should also be trimmed for hygienic reasons. The ears of these dogs should also be checked often to make sure they are clean and dry inside. These dogs are not heavy shedding dogs if they are groomed properly, and may work with people suffering from allergies. Training

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons needs early socialization and obedience training. These dogs are very keen to please their owners, and also to learn.
